Postcard c1910 Wien Vienna Karlskirche Baroque Church Austria Unused

Vienna, Austria1910Pre-linenFair-Good

Two triumphal columns modeled on Trajan's Column in Rome stand sentinel before Vienna's most celebrated Baroque church — the Karlskirche, built by Johann Fischer von Erlach from 1716 and completed by his son, a votive offering from Emperor Karl VI after a devastating plague — captured here in a luminous teal-and-sepia hand-colored view from around 1910, when the church still faced an open green park with unobstructed views that modern construction has long since altered. The flanking wings and green copper dome glow with the characteristic hand-tinting of the period, giving the image an almost painterly quality that suits the ecclesiastical grandeur of the subject. The reverse is unused and clean, with a standard split-back format.
