Soaring Gothic nave of Vienna's Stefanskirche glows in rare early Photochrom color — the towering ribbed vaults, ornate Baroque side altars, and a vivid red crucifix at the high altar captured in a process that transformed travel imagery around 1900. St. Stephen's Cathedral, begun in the 12th century and rebuilt in Gothic splendor after 1359, stands as Austria's most iconic ecclesiastical monument; this interior view looking east down the nave shows the elaborate pulpit canopy at left and a richly gilded altarpiece at right, all bathed in the luminous hand-applied color tints that made Photochrom cards the prestige souvenir of the Belle Époque.
