Red-tiled domes and Spanish Renaissance towers soar above a jungle of Florida palms in this vivid hand-tinted White Border postcard of the Hotel Ponce de Leon — arguably the most architecturally significant hotel ever built in the American South. Commissioned by Standard Oil magnate Henry Flagler and designed by Carrere & Hastings, the poured-concrete Moorish Revival palace opened its doors in 1888, instantly transforming St. Augustine into the "Newport of the South." The card's reverse carries a printed description noting the hotel was "built 25 years ago" — placing the card's printing around 1913 — and praises the entrance gate posts bearing "a lion's masque, the heraldic lion of Leon." The hotel closed in 1967 and was beautifully repurposed as Flagler College, which it remains today. Unused and clean.
