RPPC Postcard 1938 Old Schooner Boothbay Harbor Maine Real Photo Sailboat

Boothbay Harbor, Maine, USA1938RPPCGood

The graceful bowsprit and tangled rigging of an aged multi-masted schooner reach low over a glassy Maine cove in this evocative 1938 real-photo postcard from Boothbay Harbor — one of the great working harbors of coastal New England, where aging coasting schooners were still a common sight well into the Depression years. A wooded granite shore and a solitary small outbuilding complete the quietly melancholy composition. The card was mailed August 26, 1938 from Boothbay Harbor to a woman named Mrs. John M. ("addressed to Chautauqua, New York") with a warm but hurried note: the sender assures her that a planned Thursday visit will still happen — "But I will let you know definitely later" — and mentions how beautiful and restorative the coastal air has been. The 1-cent Washington stamp (Scott #804) is well-centered and lightly cancelled with the Boothbay Harbor machine cancel.
