From a rustic wooden balcony perched high above the Salzach valley, potted geraniums frame one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Austria — the sweeping Salzachtal visible far below, the river threading through patchwork farmland toward the distant snow-capped peaks of the Tennengebirge. This atmospheric real-photo postcard was taken at the Eisriesenwelt-Rasthütte (rest hut) at 1,046 meters elevation near Werfen, Salzburg, the gateway lodge to the famous Eisriesenwelt ice cave system — the world's largest accessible ice cave. Postmarked "Eisriesenwelt Werfen im Tennengebirge" on 9 July 1927, the card was sent to Fräulein Anny in Vienna, carrying a 10 Groschen Austrian stamp and a message full of wonder about the mountain experience.
