The garden beyond glows in warm autumnal gold, making the intimate domestic scene feel all the more tender. Numbered No. 7174, this is the kind of greetings card ("Grüss aus" — Greetings from) that was enormously popular in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the turn of the century, blending Romantic genre painting with the new craze for decorative postcards. Sent in October 1900 from a small sender identified only as a place-name, the card traveled to Karl in Mannswörth bei Schwechat, a village just southeast of Vienna, carried by a 5 Heller Franz Joseph stamp.
