Postcard 1910s Grand Canyon Hotel Dining Room Yellowstone Park Haynes RPPC

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA1913Pre-linenExcellent

White-clothed tables stretch in elegant symmetry down the long, light-filled dining room of the Grand Canyon Hotel at Yellowstone National Park — a hall of rough-hewn columns, hanging light fixtures, and Mission-style chairs that perfectly embodied the rustic grandeur the park's concessionaires cultivated for wealthy Edwardian tourists. F. Jay Haynes, the official photographer of Yellowstone National Park and a titan of early American landscape photography, captured this interior with characteristic precision. The card was never sent, its address side pristine, bearing the published instruction that domestic postage was 1¢ and foreign 2¢ — placing it firmly in the pre-1917 era. The Grand Canyon Hotel (later known as the Canyon Hotel) burned in 1960, making images of its interior rare primary documents of a vanished landmark.
