Postcard 1900 Luzern Hotel des Balances Switzerland UDB Charnaux Frères

Lucerne, Switzerland1900Pre-linenExcellent

The ornate painted façade of the Hôtel des Balances rises from the medieval streetscape of Lucerne in this evocative pre-Divided Back photographic postcard — one of the grandest hotel buildings in all of Switzerland, its walls covered in elaborate Renaissance-style frescoes that have delighted travelers since the 14th century. Published by the prestigious Genevan firm Charnaux Frères & Cie. under their catalog number 1524, this crisp black-and-white photographic print captures the hotel's arched ground-floor entrance, shuttered windows, and the richly decorated upper stories with a clarity that brings the old town waterfront vividly to life. The Hôtel des Balances, situated on the banks of the Reuss River, was already a celebrated stop on the Grand Tour circuit when this card was produced around the turn of the 20th century, likely carried home by a well-heeled American or British traveler as a memento of Switzerland's most storied city. The back is a pristine undivided address-only format in German, French, and Italian — the trilingual standard of Swiss postal cards of this era.
