One of the most consequential documents in European history is reproduced on this remarkable early French carte postale — a facsimile of Napoleon I's Act of Abdication, signed 6 April 1814 at the Palais de Fontainebleau, rendered here as a calque (tracing) engraved by Pierre Tardieu and photographically reproduced on card stock. The flowing script, partially obscured by a bold ink blot, records Napoleon's declaration that — the Allied Powers having proclaimed him the sole obstacle to peace in Europe — he renounces for himself and his successors the thrones of France and Italy, faithful to his oath and prepared to make any personal sacrifice, even life itself, for the good of France. Published as card no. 191 in the prestigious "LL" (Levy et ses Fils / Léon & Lévy) series on the Palais de Fontainebleau, this unused card dates to the Edwardian golden age of documentary postcard publishing, circa 1900–1910, and represents a rare primary-source artifact in miniature that appeals equally to Napoleonic historians and postcard collectors.
