RPPC Postcard c.1950 Hotel Majestic Acapulco Mexico Real Photo Teale

Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico1952RPPCGood

Perched dramatically above Acapulco Bay, the modernist Hotel Majestic stacks its sun-drenched terraces and balconies against a hillside lush with tropical vegetation in this crisp real-photo postcard — the sparkling bay dotted with sailboats stretching away toward distant green headlands that would soon be crowded with the jet-set towers of the 1960s boom. The sender, R. Teale, writes to a colleague named Peggy at Teale Machine Co., 1425 University Avenue, Rochester, NY, with a dry wit: "Our hotel in Acapulco — from the front, it looks like a typewriting machine!" — perhaps an in-joke between colleagues at a typewriter business. The 25-centavo Michoacán Arte Popular airmail stamp and the Correo Aéreo frank date this posting to the early-to-mid 1950s, capturing Acapulco at the very dawn of its international resort era, before the Costera highway reshaped the waterfront forever.
