Postcard Chrome Nogales Sonora Mexico Calle Campillo 1964 Petley Studios

Nogales, Sonora, Mexico1964ChromeGood

Calle Campillo cuts through the heart of Nogales, Sonora in this crisp 1964 chrome view — the Hotel Fray Marcos de Niza's ten-story tower dominating the skyline in warm golden stucco, while street-level shops like Casa Almada (Ropa y Novedades) and a busy Correos post office anchor daily life on the right. American cars from the late 1950s fill the roadway, pedestrians stroll the sidewalks, and a traffic light presides over the intersection — a border city scene caught between Mexican tradition and postwar modernity. Ruth sent this to "Mrs. Howard S." in Richmond, Massachusetts, postmarked February 26, 1964 from Nogales, Arizona — the American twin city across the international line: "We went here today + are staying one night in Nogales, Ariz. Back to Phoenix tomorrow." A 4-cent Lincoln stamp, the workhorse of early-1960s American postage, carries the message home.
