A golden cross crowns the green facade of Nevería La Barca while market vendors' wooden tables overflow with colorful produce in the foreground — all framing the honey-stone towers of Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, one of the oldest surviving mission churches on the U.S.-Mexico border, built in 1652. The linen-era color printing saturates the sky a dreamy turquoise and gives the church's bell tower a warmth it still radiates today. Published from El Paso, Texas, and requiring Mexican postage, these cards were sold to the flood of American tourists who crossed the Rio Grande for a taste of old Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s, many of them stopping at the very market stalls pictured here.
