Bathed in the saturated turquoise and saffron palette of the golden age of linen printing, this stunning card of the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard captures one of Los Angeles's most storied addresses at its glamorous peak — its long Spanish Mission façade flanked by swaying palms, a riot of tulips and marigolds carpeting the foreground pergola gardens, and most tantalizingly, a neon marquee on the rooftop advertising Bergen McCarthy, the wildly popular ventriloquist act of Edgar Bergen and his dummy Charlie McCarthy, who performed regularly at the hotel's famous Cocoanut Grove nightclub. The Ambassador opened in 1921 and hosted six Academy Awards ceremonies; decades later it became the site of Robert Kennedy's assassination in 1968 and was finally demolished in 2005, making every surviving visual document of the hotel a piece of irreplaceable Los Angeles history. This unused example is in exceptional condition with vibrant color and crisp stock.
