Postcard 1905 Palm Walk Echo Park Los Angeles CA Poly-Chrome Rochester UDB

Los Angeles, California, USA1905Pre-linenGood

A winding gravel path ribbons through a lush cathedral of palms at Echo Park, one of Los Angeles's oldest public green spaces, in this exquisite early-1900s Poly-Chrome color card — the saturated greens and blue sky conjuring a paradise that drew health-seekers and tourists west by the trainload. Stocky Mexican fan palms and feathery date palms line the walk in alternating rhythm, their fibrous trunks catching the California light, while manicured hedgerows frame the foreground. Published by the Rochester News Company of Rochester, NY (printed in Leipzig, Dresden — the world capital of chromolithography at the time), this undivided-back card predates the 1907 U.S. postal regulation requiring a divided back, firmly dating it to 1901–1907. Echo Park Lake was established in 1892, and by the early 1900s its palm-lined walks were a celebrated civic showpiece, photographed endlessly for the souvenir trade. A delightful, clean example of the golden age of American color postcards.
