Warm pine paneling glows amber in this mid-century chrome postcard, transporting the viewer into the circa-1710 keeping room of the Wells-Thorn House in historic Deerfield, Massachusetts — a room where colonial families like those of early settlers once gathered to eat, work, and survive harsh New England winters. A richly patterned Turkey-style carpet drapes the trestle dining table at center; a carved oak court cupboard stands against the back wall beneath a small mirror, flanked by elaborately turned high-back chairs with caned seats. The iron chandelier holds unlit candles, and leaded diamond-pane windows admit cool light behind red curtains. Deerfield's Historic Deerfield museum complex preserves some of the finest early American domestic interiors in New England, and the Wells-Thorn House — built in stages beginning around 1717 — is one of its crown jewels.
