Postcard 1904 St-Brieuc Hotel des Ducs de Bretagne France Lévy LL #21

St-Brieuc, Brittany, France1904Pre-linenGood

A weathered half-timbered façade leans gently toward the cobbled rue in St-Brieuc, Brittany — this is the Maison du XVe Siècle, known as the Hôtel des Ducs de Bretagne, rebuilt in 1572 by Yvon Collon and photographed here by the Lévy et Neurdein Réunis (LL) studio in one of their celebrated French topographical series, the exposed oak skeleton of the building darkened with centuries of Atlantic salt air while potted plants spill cheerfully from the upper balcony. The Lévy firm, founded in Paris and based at 44 rue Letellier, was the dominant publisher of French regional postcards in the early twentieth century, and their sharp-detail albumen-style prints remain highly prized by Breton collectors today. The back of this unused card is pristine, with the full LL printing credit visible in the spine text, and the layout — "Correspondance / Adressé" split — places it in the transitional 1903–1906 window.
