From high above the rooftops of Lucerne a panoramic bird's-eye illustration unfolds the entire Vierwaldstättersee — Lake Lucerne — in one sweeping, almost audacious cartographic view, with the Rigi soaring to the left, the Bürgenstock peninsula jutting into the centre, and the jagged silhouettes of the Titlis and Pilatus ranges receding into the distance under a sky of Alpine white. Published by Verlag Gebr. Wehrli of Kilchberg, Zurich, one of Switzerland's most technically accomplished postcard firms, this panoramic map-style card (catalogue no. 14101) was enormously popular with Edwardian tourists — perhaps a student named Karl or a honeymooning couple — who wanted to orient themselves to the grand geography they were about to traverse by steamship and rack railway. The undivided back with its trilingual UPU text places production firmly before 1907, and the engraving-style illustration technique, likely printed by Wehrli's celebrated photomechanical process, gives the card the quality of a miniature topographic print.
