Postcard 1900 Berneroberland Switzerland Alps Panorama Map Wehrli Zürich

Bernese Oberland, Switzerland1902Pre-linenFair-Good

A breathtaking cartographic panorama of the Bernese Oberland unfolds across this early Swiss card — every legendary summit labeled in crisp German script, from the Wetterhorn (3708 m) at left sweeping past the Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn, the famous Eiger (3975 m), Mönch (4105 m), and Jungfrau (4176 m) to the Breithorn (3779 m) at right, with dotted railway and trail lines threading through Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, and Mürren below. The foreground shows an Interlaken townscape with a domed civic building, grounding the sublime alpine geography in human scale. Published by the celebrated Gebr. Wehrli of Kilchberg-Zürich — one of Switzerland's most respected photographic postcard houses of the era — this panoramic map card was a practical souvenir for the Edwardian tourist planning a mountain excursion, as useful as it was beautiful. The multilingual back (French, German, Italian) reflects Switzerland's national identity and Universal Postal Union membership, consistent with the early 1900s undivided-back era.
