Postcard 1905 Château de Josselin Dining Room Salle à Manger Brittany France

Josselin, Brittany, France1906Pre-linenGood

Inside the medieval walls of the Château de Josselin — the fairy-tale Rohan family fortress rising from the Oust River in Brittany — a monumental equestrian portrait dominates the great dining hall (Salle à Manger), its knight in full armor silhouetted against a broad arched alcove while two long refectory tables stretch across the chequerboard stone floor beneath a heavy beamed ceiling. Shelves of porcelain, candlesticks, and decorative objects line every wall, testifying to the wealth and taste of the de Rohan dynasty who still occupied the castle at the time this photograph was taken. The Château de Josselin had been partially destroyed during the Revolution and extensively restored in the 19th century by the Duc de Rohan; postcards of its interiors were enormously popular souvenirs for visitors arriving by the then-new railway. The divided back (image _02) with separate "Correspondance" and "Adresse" columns dates this to post-1904 France, and the "Collectio…" publisher imprint at lower right is consistent with the Collection ND (Neurdein) or a regional Breton publisher.
