Mailed from Quebec City on a September morning in 1937, this hand-colored photographic card shows La Citadelle — the star-shaped British fortress perched dramatically atop Cap Diamant — as seen from the St. Lawrence River, steamboats and docking structures nestled at its rocky base far below. The warm tones of the coloring process give the cliff face an almost painterly warmth, the Château Frontenac just visible at the upper right. What makes this card genuinely compelling is its journey: a traveler named Wolfram dashed off "Herzliche Grüsse aus Quebec" — heartfelt greetings from Quebec — to Else and family at 120 Kaitzerstasse, Dresden-A-27, Germany, just two years before the world would be torn apart by war. The card was published by Librairie Garneau Ltée of Quebec and franked with two Canadian 2¢ George V "Medallion" stamps paying the 4¢ international postcard rate, postmarked Quebec Sep 8, 8 AM, 1937.
