On the 6th of July, 1807, on a warm summer street in Tilsit, Napoleon extended his gloved hand to receive Louise, Queen of Prussia — the most beautiful and politically tenacious royal in Europe — who had made a desperate personal appeal to save her kingdom from French annexation. Nicolas-Auguste Gosse captured this charged diplomatic encounter in oil on canvas, and now it survives in miniature on this luminous sepia photomechanical postcard from the Musée de Versailles series. The detail image (scan _03) brings us startlingly close: Napoleon's cool, appraising gaze; Louise's crown and white empire gown; Tsar Alexander I looming tall between them in dark uniform. The composition crackles with the unspoken tension of a negotiation that would redraw the map of Europe. Published by Lévy et Neurdein Réunis in their celebrated "LL" series, this divided-back card was never mailed and retains crisp, bright surfaces on both front and reverse.
