Postcard c1905 Fontainebleau Vue sur le Parterre Garden France LL No.395

Fontainebleau, France1906Pre-linenGood

From a gently elevated vantage point, the famous Parterre garden at the Château de Fontainebleau spreads in perfect neoclassical symmetry — a large rectangular reflecting pool at its heart, a lone rowboat drifting near the central fountain, clipped flower beds and conical topiary arranged with Cartesian precision, and the dense forest of Fontainebleau crowning the horizon. This serene bird's-eye photograph, rendered in crisp grey tones, was captured when the royal gardens still bore the hush of their long imperial association — Napoleon himself had signed his first abdication at the château in 1814. Published by Lévy et ses Fils under their ubiquitous LL imprint as card number 395, this is a classic example of the early-twentieth-century French topographic postcard at its understated best. The undivided-style back (message left of the vertical rule, address right) with the note that foreign countries may not accept correspondence on the picture side dates production to the period immediately after France's 1904 postal reform.
