WWI Feldpost Postcard 1915 Molkenrain Vosges Germany Garde-Schützen Stamp

Molkenrain, Vosges, Alsace (then Germany)1915Pre-linenFair-Good

From the fog-wrapped heights of the Vosges Mountains, this haunting black-and-white real-photo-style view of the Molkenrain summit — a strategically contested ridge on the Franco-German border — traveled through the German military postal system in May 1915, carrying a tender front-line message from a soldier named Ludwig to his loved ones back in Alsace. The Molkenrain (1,123 m) loomed over intense fighting between French and German forces throughout 1914–1915; holding its forested slopes meant controlling observation over the Rhine plain. Ludwig's message, written in old German script, opens warmly — "Meinem Lieben" ("My dear one") — and closes with what appears to be a poignant note that he cannot write more. The card bears two superimposed military cancels: a purple circular unit stamp reading 4. Komp. Garde-Schützen-Bataillon · Brief-Stempel and a blue oval German field post cancel dated 22.5.15, addressed to Bühl, Alsace (then under German administration). Publisher Felix Luib, Strasbourg, produced this view.
