Postcard 1930s La Rochelle Porte de la Grosse Horloge France Monuments

La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, France1935Pre-linenExcellent

Standing sentinel over the old port city of La Rochelle, the medieval Porte de la Grosse Horloge — the Great Clock Gate — dominates this crisp black-and-white photographic postcard from the 1930s, its twin round Romanesque towers flanking a pointed archway through which a vintage automobile barely peeks. Advertising hoardings for Vittel Grande Source mineral water and Cao chocolate plaster the left side, grounding this timeless monument in vivid pre-war commercial life. The gate, originally a 14th-century fortification controlling access from land to the inner harbour, received its distinctive baroque clock tower and sculpture program in the 18th century — the stone lions and allegorical figures crowning the belfry still watchful today. Published by the Service Commercial Monuments Historiques from the Grand Palais, Paris, this is a high-quality photographic card from the official French historic monuments series, unused and in excellent preservation.
