Advertising hoardings for Vittel Grande Source mineral water and Cao chocolate plaster the left side, grounding this timeless monument in vivid pre-war commercial life. The gate, originally a 14th-century fortification controlling access from land to the inner harbour, received its distinctive baroque clock tower and sculpture program in the 18th century — the stone lions and allegorical figures crowning the belfry still watchful today.
