A breathtaking perspective down the full length of the Galerie des Batailles at the Château de Versailles unfolds in this stately black-and-white photographic postcard — marble busts of French generals line both sides like a ghostly honor guard beneath a soaring barrel-vaulted glass ceiling, while monumental battle paintings glow on the right-hand wall and gilded Corinthian pilasters recede toward infinity. Created by King Louis-Philippe in 1837 to celebrate thirty-three centuries of French military victories, the gallery stretches 120 metres and contains 33 colossal paintings — including works by Vernet, Delacroix, and Gérard. This official card was issued by the Édition des Musées Nationaux under the Château de Versailles / RF seal, numbered simply as card 1 in the Galerie des Batailles series, suggesting an early issue in what became a long-running official documentation project.
