With acrobatic drama frozen mid-air, this striking color-litho postcard (No. 4031) depicts the "Salto de la Garrocha" — the spectacular bullfight maneuver in which a torero plants a long pole and vaults completely over the charging bull's back — the bull still bearing the bloody banderillas of the fight. Published by the Lower California Commercial Co., Inc., with offices in Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, and Tecate, this card was mailed to Miss Florence W— at 150 Lynd St., Rochester, New York, with a partial Tijuana cancel visible. The handwritten message (in pencil) is partially legible; the sender — whose name appears to begin with "S" — describes something of the spectacle. The publisher's descriptive text on the back explains that the torero "stands at one side of the arena and when the bull dashes at him, by the aid of the pole, he leaps over the entire length of the bull and usually upon alighting, runs to safety." Two U.S. 4¢ Lincoln Memorial stamps (green) frank the card, suggesting a 1950s–early 1960s mailing date consistent with the chrome-era card stock.
