Postcard 1956 Scots Guards Piper Valentine's Art Colour Aberdeen Scotland

Aberdeen, Scotland1956ChromeGood

A swaggering Scots Guards piper strides forward in full ceremonial dress — scarlet Royal Stuart tartan kilt, deep-blue tunic, and towering black bearskin bonnet — his Great Highland bagpipes ablaze with red silk ribbons, the very picture of martial pageantry outside a palace gate ca. 1956. Published by Valentine & Sons in their celebrated Art Colour series, this vivid chromolithograph captures the pomp of one of Britain's oldest and most storied regiments, whose lineage stretches to Irish companies raised in 1642. The card was posted from Aberdeen on 23 August 1956 by a traveler named Margaret, who wrote to Ellen in Rochester, New York, gushing about Scotland: "Scotland was fine … the people are just wonderful … I found the Scottish children adorable … an amazing evening … a beautiful Edinburgh." A charming transatlantic time capsule of a summer holiday.
