A perfectly pyramidal peak — the dramatic Myrhorn — presides over the broad glacial valley of Jostedal in western Norway, its flanks streaked by a slender waterfall and the valley floor threaded by a pale river, all rendered in the soft halftone grey of an early 1920s photographic postcard. Jostedal is home to the Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European mainland, and the mountain scenery here drew early adventurers and Grand Tour travelers in equal measure. This card was posted from Turtegrø (the famous mountaineering hotel at the foot of Skagastølen) on 22 [July?] 1924 — stamped but the stamp has been removed, leaving a clear Turtegrø circular postmark. The writer, addressing Mrs. Claude in Pittsford (Monroe County), New York, fills every centimeter of the back with a dense, excited travelogue: describing perilous auto roads, a day at the glacier, thundering waterfalls, and sleeping with the window open on a Norwegian midnight.
