Postcard c1910 General View Bergen Norway Harbor 1-Cent Washington Stamp Used

Bergen, Norway1912Pre-linenFair-Good

Perched high on a hillside vantage, the camera sweeps across all of Bergen — Norway's great western port city — in a sweeping panoramic tinted view that captures the dense red-roofed townscape, the crowded inner harbor bristling with masts and steamship funnels, and the long fjord stretching silver toward distant mountains beyond; the card's caption notes Bergen's famously narrow medieval streets and its staple trade in cod-liver oil and dried fish. Mailed to Mrs. Fred in Red Creek, New York, with a U.S. 1-cent Washington green stamp — suggesting it may have been sent domestically after being purchased abroad, or mailed from a U.S. port — the sender (signing as "your friend") writes warmly about Mr. Berne, Gabriel, and plans to come to Red Creek, with a promise that "we will come date in Aug." A lively early-century souvenir postcard with two collectors' appeal points: the panoramic view and the classic green 1¢ Washington definitive.
