Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising from a glacial valley in western Norway, the tiered dragon-headed rooflines of Borgund Stavkirke pierce a brooding sky in this striking 1927 real-photo postcard — one of the best-preserved medieval stave churches in the world, dating to around 1180 AD. Photographer Carl Normann captured the scene with masterful depth, framing the ancient wooden church against the sharp V of the Lærdal valley, a detached bell tower standing sentinel to the right and the valley hotel visible in the middle distance. The card was published under copyright ("Eneret 1927") and bears the distinctive hand-numbered catalogue system Normann used across his prolific Norwegian landscape series.
