Bathed in amber floodlight against a velvet black sky, the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City glows with the operatic splendour its Italian-designed marble dome was built to command — while a parade of late-1950s American tail-finned Buicks and Chevrolets lines the boulevard below, anchoring the scene firmly in the chrome-and-Kodachrome era. Photographed by Mark Turuk for AMMEX Asociados, the card was sent airmail from San Blas, Nayarit in March 1969 by two travellers named Char and Bob to a woman named Edgar (likely Edna) in Fairport, New York. Their message is a small gem of mid-century travel writing: folk ballet attended the night before, the "beautiful building and fantastic dancing," and plans to reach the West Coast by April 4th — wanderlust captured in a few rushed lines on a par avion card.
