Postcard c1895 Brünig Switzerland Grand Hotel Station Menu Card Pre-UB Rare

Brünig Pass, Canton of Obwalden/Bern, Switzerland1895Pre-linenGood

Perched at 1,004 metres in the Swiss Alps, the Brünig Pass railway station was a theatrical gateway to the high mountain world — and this extraordinary pre-undivided-back card doubles as an actual printed luncheon menu card from the Grand Buffet de la Gare, making it a genuinely rare artefact straddling the worlds of philately, railway history, gastronomy, and Victorian travel. The front carries a meticulous pen-and-ink engraving of the station complex with the Gd. Hotel & Kurhaus nestled among Alpine firs, rack-railway carriages steaming at the platform, and the jagged teeth of the Bernese Oberland peaks soaring behind. The reverse is even more fascinating: a trilingual menu in French, English, and German offering soup of the day, roast beef à l'anglaise with vegetables, entremets, and cheese — all for Fr. 2.50 including wine — with notices to passengers that trains depart three minutes after being called. A time capsule of Belle Époque Alpine rail travel at its most civilised.
