Postcard c1910 Wien Vienna Am Hof Square Equestrian Statue Austria Pre-Linen

Vienna (Wien), Austria1910Pre-linenGood

Vienna's Am Hof square — one of the oldest and grandest open spaces in the imperial city, site of Roman encampments and Habsburg proclamations — fills this striking hand-tinted pre-linen postcard with all the ceremonial grandeur of the late Austro-Hungarian era. Dominating the right foreground is the monumental equestrian statue of Field Marshal Count Rüdiger von Starhemberg (or, more likely per the square's iconography, the Mars-column and the Civic Armoury facade), while baroque and Historicist building façades recede in elegant perspective toward the center, horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians animating the cobbled square below in that unhurried Edwardian pace. The card's color treatment — a vivid blue-green sky bleeding into warm sepia tones over the stonework — is characteristic of the Viennese chromolithograph postcard trade of c. 1905–1914. The reverse is entirely blank (unused), suggesting this was a souvenir or stock copy never sent.
