Postcard 1949 Salzkammergut St. Gilgen Austria RPPC Brandt Fusch

St. Gilgen, Salzkammergut, Salzburg, Austria1949RPPCGood

From a commanding Alpine vantage point, this sweeping real-photo panorama by F. E. Brandt looks down the entire length of the Wolfgangsee toward St. Gilgen — snow-dusted peaks of the Salzkammergut range fan across the horizon in a breathtaking composition that feels almost airborne, a masterclass in Austrian mountain photography of the postwar era. Postmarked Fusch am See, August 1949, and addressed to Marie in Vienna's 15th district, the sender — writing in warm, flowing German cursive — describes wandering through the Salzkammergut landscape and sends holiday greetings. Brandt of Gmunden was one of Austria's premier scenic postcard photographers, and this panoramic view of St. Gilgen, birthplace of Mozart's mother, is among his most dramatic compositions.
