Postcard c1921 Vienna Am Hof Square Austria Artistic Litho R. Pichler WWI Era

Vienna, Austria1921Pre-linenGood

Rendered in rich sepia tones by the skilled hand of artist R. Pichler, this evocative lithographic postcard transports the viewer to Vienna's ancient Am Hof square — one of the Habsburg capital's most storied public spaces — alive with market vendors, horse-drawn carts, and strolling figures beneath the soaring Baroque façade of the Church of the Nine Choirs of Angels. Pichler's draughtsmanship is confident and lively, capturing the column of the Virgin Mary at left and the monumental civic architecture that has defined this square since the Middle Ages. Issued as a "Messe-Ansichtskarte" (Trade Fair Viewcard) for the Wiener Internationale Messe and sold in benefit of the Landesverbände Wien und Niederösterreich des Z.-V. der Kriegsinvaliden — the Central Association of War Invalids — this card carries a poignant postwar humanitarian dimension, published to raise funds for Austria's wounded veterans and their bereaved families in the tumultuous years immediately following World War I. Unused and clean, it is a fine piece of Viennese graphic art history.
