Payne, one of the most prolific Edwardian postcard illustrators of ecclesiastical and architectural subjects. Published in the prestigious "DEFCO" series by Deville, Fenwick & Co. of York and printed in England, the card was mailed with a Half Penny green stamp from Upper Holloway, London (postmarked August 1906) to Mr. Ronald S— at "Ferncliffe," Osborne Road, Portswood, Southampton — a genteel Edwardian correspondence between what appear to be family acquaintances sharing the splendor of the great cathedral.
