Postcard 1906 Edwardian St Paul's Choir London Arthur Payne Art DEFCO

London, England, UK1906Pre-linenGood

Golden candlelight floods the soaring nave of St. Paul's Cathedral as two choir figures — a verger with staff and a young chorister in red — process beneath Christopher Wren's sublime arches in this richly atmospheric art reproduction postcard painted by Arthur C. Payne, one of the most prolific Edwardian postcard illustrators of ecclesiastical and architectural subjects. Published in the prestigious "DEFCO" series by Deville, Fenwick & Co. of York and printed in England, the card was mailed with a Half Penny green stamp from Upper Holloway, London (postmarked August 1906) to Mr. Ronald S— at "Ferncliffe," Osborne Road, Portswood, Southampton — a genteel Edwardian correspondence between what appear to be family acquaintances sharing the splendor of the great cathedral.
