Postcard 1902-10 "Country's Sweet Simplicity" Thatched Cottage D.F.&Co York

Rural England (generic), York (publisher)1905Pre-linenGood

A warm wash of ochre and rose brings this idyllic English thatched cottage to life — hollyhocks and wild roses tumbling against a honey-coloured wall, a bold brick chimney stack piercing a cloud-dappled sky, and a slender Lombardy poplar catching the late afternoon sun. This chromolithographic art card, number 1848 in the celebrated "D.F. & Co." series published by Delittle, Fenwick & Co. of York, captures the Edwardian romance of rural England at its most picturesque. The title "The Country's Sweet Simplicity" — a phrase evoking pastoral verse — was a deliberate marketing appeal to city-dwellers nostalgic for village life. The undivided-back format (left space for "inland correspondence" only, with a separate address panel) firmly dates production to the pre-1902 period or very early divided-back transition years; postage instructions specifying ½d inland / 1d foreign confirm an Edwardian issue, almost certainly 1902–1907. The card is unused, retaining vivid original colour and sharp embossed detail in the floral foreground.
