Postcard Iffley Village River Thames Oxford C W Faulkner Art c1903 Undivided

Iffley, Oxfordshire, England1903Pre-linenFair-Good

A canoeist drifts in still water while two figures and a dog linger at the bank — the quiet Thames backwater at Iffley, just south of Oxford, rendered in a moody monochrome wash that captures the village's dreamy, timeless quality. Iffley was beloved by Victorian and Edwardian artists for its Norman church and willow-fringed river, and this image — reproduced from an original painting and bearing an artist's monogram reading "H. Cole" or similar — has all the languor of an afternoon punting excursion. A sailing dinghy passes in the middle distance; smoke rises from a riverside cottage. Published by C.W. Faulkner & Co. of London E.C., one of the most prolific Edwardian art-postcard houses, this undivided-back card dates to the brief window of 1902–1903 when the left side could carry a message for inland post. A charming piece of Oxfordshire river topography.
