Postcard Ruskin Museum Sheffield Meersbrook Park Colour c1905 Reliable Series

Sheffield, Yorkshire, England1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Bathed in the warm tones of chromolithography, the red-brick Ruskin Museum at Meersbrook Park in Sheffield glows against a theatrical sky of cerulean and gilt — a Victorian villa that once housed John Ruskin's remarkable gift to the working men and women of Sheffield: his Guild of St George collection of minerals, manuscripts, watercolours and natural specimens. Founded in 1875 at Ruskin's personal instigation, the museum was a radical act of cultural democratisation, bringing art and beauty to an industrial city. The card shows the building's handsome Italianate facade, with a winding path, park benches, and a horse-drawn vehicle in the foreground suggesting a Sunday-afternoon visit. Printed by "chromotyping in Saxony" (Germany), this "Reliable Series" card — number 65886 — dates to the undivided/early divided back period of c.1903–1906, and carries a pencilled price notation of "75" on the back. A historically significant piece for Ruskin scholars and Sheffield collectors alike.
