Antique & Vintage Postcards

From a hillock above the patchwork fields of Nether Wasdale, the photographer's lens sweeps across one of England's most dramatic valley landscapes — the great fells of the Scawfell (Scafell) Range rising in majestic procession beyond a foreground of scrub woodland and rolling pasture, their flanks etched with shadow even in summer light. This real-photo postcard, published by James Atkinson of 6 King Street, Ulverston as part of his "Atkinson Series — Real Photo Post Cards," bears the catalogue number 895 and dates stylistically and by back-printing convention to c.1908–1914. The Lake District was already a pilgrimage site for walkers and nature-lovers in the Edwardian era, inspired by Wordsworth and Ruskin, and cards like this fed a hungry market for fell scenery. The card is unused, clean on reverse, and the sepia photographic image retains excellent tonal depth.
