Antique & Vintage Postcards

On a calm August afternoon in 1947 — just two years after the war's end — someone paused in Ramsden Square, Barrow-in-Furness, to send a postcard back to friends in Salford, capturing this stately neoclassical library building framed by mature trees, its broad forecourt presided over by the statue of Sir James Ramsden, the town's great Victorian industrialist and first mayor. The "Barrow and District" series real-photo postcard is postmarked 13 August 1947, and carries a GB 2½d orange-red George VI stamp, the message written diagonally across the correspondence section in the hand of a sender whose name appears to begin with a "J" — a holiday visitor sharing observations about the town, mentioning names including what appears to be "Kaplan" and places in Barrow. Ramsden Square remains a civic centrepiece of Barrow today, though the postwar austerity years lend this image a quietly poignant air.
