Postcard 1912 Lead Kindly Light Religious Verse Bamforth Series #4519/3 NJ

Wyckoff, New Jersey, USA (postmarked); Clifton, New Jersey, USA (addressed)1912Pre-linenGood

A lone woman in flowing rose robes kneels beside a mountain torrent, gazing heavenward toward a vision of angel-faced maidens in white — this luminous chromolithographic card by the celebrated Bamforth & Co. illustrates verse three of Cardinal Newman's beloved hymn "Lead Kindly Light," and was mailed in October 1912 from Wyckoff, New Jersey, by a sender named Mrs. Rothwell to her friend Mrs. Beck on Clifton Avenue in Clifton, New Jersey. Bamforth of Holmfirth, England was the most prolific publisher of song and hymn postcards in the Edwardian era, and their carefully staged photographic compositions — here hand-colored and printed with atmospheric mountain and waterfall scenery — were enormously popular on both sides of the Atlantic. The verse printed below reads: "So long Thy power hast blest me, / Sure it still will lead me on, / O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, / Till the night is gone. / And with the morn those angel faces smile, / Which I have loved long since and lost awhile." Mrs. Rothwell's brief but warm note promises a visit: "Just a remembrance. I am still thinking of you, & the lace have made, oo someday I shall stroll in to see you. Love to Baby. From Mrs Rothwell."
