Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rendered in bold, confident pen-and-ink cross-hatching on a cream embossed card stock that almost trembles with the cold, this evocative Swiss Alpine scene shows a cluster of timber chalets half-buried in a snowfield, jagged peaks thrusting into a pale sky behind — a composition of pure Helvetian Romanticism that was enormously fashionable at the turn of the 20th century. Published by Vouga & Cie, Éditeurs, Genève (Geneva), as No. 212 in their illustrated artistic series, the card exemplifies the high-quality engraved and drawn postcards that Swiss publishers led Europe in producing during the golden postcard era of 1895–1910. The artist's initials — appearing to read "Müller" or similar — are embedded subtly in the lower middle of the composition. The card is unused, blank on reverse, and the embossed linen-effect stock remains crisp and fresh.
