Postcard 1915 PPIE Palace of Education Fine Arts Lagoon San Francisco Expo

San Francisco, California, USA1915Pre-linenGood

The gleaming white Byzantine-Renaissance dome of the Palace of Education shimmers in perfect mirror reflection across the Fine Arts Lagoon at San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 — weeping willows trail their branches into the still water, ornamental towers glow amber in the afternoon light, and the grand arched portal frames a vision of the optimistic City Beautiful movement that declared San Francisco reborn from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake. Designed by architect W. B. Faville at a cost of $304,263, the Palace of Education was one of the crown jewels of the PPIE, which drew nearly 19 million visitors over ten months in 1915; this souvenir card, published by the Souvenir Guide Publishers from the Hobart Building in San Francisco, was sold at the fair as a keepsake of a world-class event that celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and America's coming of age on the global stage. The unused card retains excellent color fidelity and carries a hand-written price notation of "3-" in pencil.
