Antique & Vintage Postcards

A generous handful of vivid blue cornflowers — Centaurea cyanus, the Kornblume beloved across German folk culture — spills from a simple white ceramic pitcher, one bloom escaping to rest on the pale tabletop beside a fallen petal. Römmler & Jonas have achieved a wonderfully soft, almost impressionistic quality here through their natural-color process, the fringed florets glowing in cobalt and violet against the neutral ground. The cornflower carried deep symbolic weight in Imperial Germany as the favourite flower of Kaiser Wilhelm I, making cards like this — presumably popular keepsakes in the first decade of the twentieth century — subtly patriotic as well as simply beautiful.
