Antique & Vintage Postcards

In looping, earnest block letters a young boy named Michael wrote to his grandparents in Miami from somewhere in Italy in October 1969, squeezing big news between the lines of Francesco Guardi's glittering canvas: "GRANDNA GRANDPA I LIKE TO SEE VENICE MY SCHOOL IS CALLED ST. MICHAELS I KNOW HOW TO READ — LOVE, MICHAEL" — a child's postcard that accidentally became a perfect time capsule, pairing one of Venice's great veduta paintings with the unfiltered joy of a kid discovering the world. The front reproduces Guardi's "Il Bucintoro in Riva degli Schiavoni — Particolare" (detail), depicting the ornate Venetian state galley thronged by crowds on the Riva, painted circa 1766–1770 and now among the most iconic images of the Serenissima at her ceremonial height. Published by Edizioni ARDO, Venice, printed by P. Marzari S.R.L., Schio (no. 547), the card was postmarked at Firenze Ferrovia (Florence railway station post office) on 27 October 1969, franked with two Italian Republic stamps totaling 115 lire, and addressed c/o Mark Price to Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Hansen at 231 N.E. 28th Street, Miami, Florida 33137, USA, sent via airmail.
