Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sent from the alpine village of Admont in Styria, Austria on 4 May 1932, this real-photo postcard draws the eye down a freshly paved mountain road as the jagged limestone spires of the Hochtorgruppe erupt from the clouds above — a scene that feels as dramatic today as it did when Franz Knollmüller's Graz atelier produced it. The Gesäuse gorge road, carved through one of Austria's wildest alpine landscapes, was itself a marvel of interwar engineering, and the card's reverse carries the elegant oval rubber-stamp of the Franz Lux Stiftskeller in Admont — the restaurant attached to the famous Benedictine Abbey — suggesting the sender paused for refreshment before writing. The card is addressed to Stefan in Miesenbach and bears a period Austrian stamp, making it a tidy philatelic and topographic document of 1930s Styria.
