Antique & Vintage Postcards

A vivid lithographic greeting card postmarked 1896 whisks us to the medieval rooftops of Regensburg, Bavaria — its twin-spired Gothic cathedral piercing a pale sky above a dense cityscape of terracotta roofs rendered in warm, hand-tinted colour. Three vignettes crowd the card: a sweeping panoramic view of the city, an oval inset of the Walhalla temple (that gleaming Greek-revival monument perched above the Danube at Donaustauf), and a lower cartouche depicting Regensburg as it appeared in 1493, copied from the famous Schedel Weltchronik woodcut. Decorative yellow daisies and blue forget-me-nots frame the script title Gruss aus Regensburg. On the message side, a sender who signs only as a close friend writes in flowing German Kurrent script to a "Liebe Puppe!" — a term of endearment — thanking her for beautiful flowers and promising to write soon with a longer letter; the warmth of the 19th-century friendship leaps off the yellowed card. Published by Monopol Bayern München (no. 782), this is a classic undivided-back Gruss aus lithograph from the pioneering decade of picture-postcard collecting.
