Antique & Vintage Postcards

A riot of hand-tinted colour transports us to the cobblestoned market plaza of Uruapan, Michoacán, circa 1908 — vendors in brilliant red sarapes and broad straw sombreros crowd beneath ancient laurel trees, baskets of produce and woven goods spread across the stones while the baroque arcade of the presidencia municipio glows warm ochre in the background. Published by the Sonora News Company of Mexico City — the dominant early-century postcard distributor in Mexico — and numbered 2976 in their extensive catalogue, this card is a classic specimen of the photochrome/hand-coloured tourist card genre that documented Mexican market life for export to American and European collectors. Mailed on 9 June 1908 from an unspecified Mexican location, it was franked with a 1¢ Benjamin Franklin U.S. stamp and postmarked at Coudersport, Pennsylvania on 10 June 1908. Sender "Mabel" dashes off a family message to the Root Brothers in Ulysses, PA, promising the "whole darn family" for the noon train that Thursday.
