1908 Austria Postcard Zillertal Zaunfall Stillup Waterfall Kufstein Cancel

Zillertal (Stillup Valley), Tyrol, Austria1908Pre-linenGood

High in the Tyrolean Alps, a lone herdsman tends his dark cattle and goats on a rocky alpine slope while behind him a spectacular waterfall — the Zaunfall in the Stillup valley of the Zillertal — cascades white and thunderous down a sheer cliff face framed by pine forest and snow-capped peaks above. This hand-colored photographic postcard, mailed on the 27th of July 1908 from Kufstein (the eagle-crowned fortress town at the Inn valley gateway to the Tyrol), carries an Austro-Hungarian imperial 5-heller green stamp bearing the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, postmarked at the Kufstein railway post office. The message, written in the old German Kurrent script, is addressed to a recipient in Brixen (today Bressanone, South Tyrol, then still Austrian) and signed by Josef Zacharias. The publisher was Buchhandlung Carl Schmelzer of Vienna I, a respected bookseller-publisher of alpine scenic cards.
